The Eco-museum’s mission
The Batana Eco-museum through its varied research programmes based on knowledge, respect for cultural heritage and dialogue, inclusion, innovation, its interdisciplinary approach and use of multimedia evaluates, protects, interprets, recreates, presents and communicates tangible and intangible maritime heritage and actively reinforces the cultural identity and uniqueness of Rovinj as a pleasant place to live for all of its residents and as an unique destination for all of its visitors.
Main goals of the Eco-museum
The development and innovation of eco-museum principles, applied in the local community for its needs through the promotion of innovative cultural tourism, participatory and various programmes for strengthening the cultural competency of communities for sustainable development are the keys tasks of Rovinj’s Eco-museum. No less important are the objectives of raising the awareness of the role of the batana boat as an important part of the intercultural dialogue with which Rovinj’s community networks are connected to the larger family of traditional vessels and with its related local communities on the Adriatic and Mediterranean and how it actively contributes to international initiatives protecting the maritime heritage and culture of Europe and the world.
The elements of the Eco-museum and where they are located
The Eco-museum’s mission and main goals are conveyed and implemented through its principal elements:
1. The House of Batana, local title muòstra, the central interpretation and documentation centre with a permanent exhibition;
2. Spacio Matika, local title spàcio, the place to experience the tastes, smells and the singing of the local maritime heritage;
3. Mali Škver (Little Shipyard), local title peîcio squèro, the place to celebrate the intangible heritage of the batana’s construction;
4. Rovinj’s regatta (known simply as Regata) of traditional wooden boats with mainly lateen and lugsails, Rovinj’s main celebration of boats, the sea and sailors; (Rovinj Archipelago- mid-June)
5. The Batana na vesla Regatta is a young regatta held in memory of Corrado Pellizzer, one of the first promoters of this type of competition. It is entirely dedicated to the batana boat and the competition takes place in three categories: senior, junior, and lady; (Rovinj Archipelago- in mid-September).
6. Batana's routes, from Mali Mol to Spacio Matika and along the Rovinj waterfront, consist of two thematic routes. The first is by sea, accompanied by a boatman, while the second is a walk along the waterfront, providing visitors with the opportunity to experience Rovinj from "Batana's perspective".
7. The "Batana's Walk" application enhances the sightseeing experience with a free virtual guide through Rovinj's maritime heritage and is available for IOS and Android platforms.
8. The souvenir shop "ʃutalateîna", located on the shore of Aldo Rismondo no. 2, is a place of inspiration and creativity, reflected in numerous handmade art objects. It also serves as a useful information point for visitors.
